by Elaine Barnett

If your home needs to be restumped, but you're trying to postpone the investment, you might be waiting until you see big signs of impending doom. Unfortunately, by the time you see the big signs, your home might be facing collapse. That's why it's important for you to restump your home before the big problems become apparent. Luckily, there are some minor signs you can watch for. These signs indicate a need for quick action. If you invest in restumping as soon as you notice any of the tell-tale signs, you can avoid the more serious damage that can come later. Read the list provided below. If you notice any of the tell-tale signs described here, contact a restumping contractor right away.

Changes in Wall Cracks

It's not uncommon for some settling to occur as your home ages. As your home settles, some minor cracks can develop, especially around door and window frames. However, you shouldn't see cracks throughout your home. Not only that, but the cracks shouldn't expand over time. If you notice an increase in wall cracks, or existing cracks continue to expand, those are signs that you need to take seriously. There's a good chance that your home is losing balance. Now's the time to have your home restumped.

Increase in Floor Bowing

If you've been monitoring your floors for signs of stump damage, you might have been watching for things like wall separation, or for spongy floorboards. However, there's another sign that you might have overlooked. That sign involves floor bowing. If you've noticed that your floors feel uneven under your feet, or that objects roll or slide when they're placed on the floor, it's time to contact a restumping contractor. Floor bowing can be a sure sign that your home needs to be restumped.

Issues With the Exterior Walls

If you're worried about the stumping under your home, now's the time to focus on the exterior. You might think that stumping issues only present problems on the inside of the house, but that's not the case. If your home needs to be restumped, you may notice loose, or missing mortar around exterior bricks. Or, you may notice new cracks in the stucco. These are signs that your home might need to be restumped.

Don't take chances with the stability of your home. If you've encountered any of the issues described here, it might be time to prepare for house restumping.
